Paper Mill Components, Automation & Process Systems
A paper or tissue machine runs on parts that wear, fabrics that are changed on a schedule, and control systems that measure and regulate the process. This category at Paper & Tissue Show covers those items: paper machine components, replacement and wear parts, machine clothing, drives, automation, quality control systems (QCS), instrumentation and auxiliary process systems.
It is built for mills sourcing individual components and systems for an existing machine or a defined upgrade. Complete production lines are listed under Paper Mill Machinery & Equipment; maintenance and engineering work is listed under Paper Mill Services and Engineering & Industrial Solutions.
What Components, Automation and Process Systems Do Paper Mills Need?
Mill requirements fall into two groups: physical components installed in or around the machine, and the control layer that measures and regulates the process.
Physical components start with replacement parts, wear parts and accessories for every section from forming to reel and finishing. Machine clothing covers the forming, press and dryer sections: forming fabrics, press felts, dryer fabrics and shoe press belts. Rolls, roll covers, cylinders and doctor blades serve the forming, press, dryer, reel and winder positions. Pumps, valves and blowers handle stock, water, air and vacuum in stock preparation, approach flow and utilities, while motors, variable-speed drives, gearboxes and couplings power each driven section.
The control layer is organized by role. DCS, PLC and SCADA systems, together with mill software, handle continuous process control, machine logic and supervision. QCS scanners and sensors measure the sheet online. Field instrumentation such as transmitters, sensors and analyzers tracks process variables throughout the mill. Steam and condensate components, process water and water treatment support the dryer section and mill utilities.
What a mill needs from each group depends on the grade produced, the machine configuration, width and operating speed, and the equipment already installed.
Which Paper Machine Components and Control Systems Can Buyers Source?
The seven groups below follow the same split: the first four are physical components, the last three are control, measurement and auxiliary systems. Each has its own specification data and purchasing criteria.
Paper Machine Components and Spare Parts
Paper machine components are the individual mechanical parts fitted across the forming, press, dryer, reel and finishing sections. Mills buy them as planned replacements, as wear parts consumed in normal operation, or as accessories added during an upgrade.
Requests for paper machine spare parts are usually built around a drawing or part number. Where no drawing exists, suppliers work from the OEM and machine model, measured dimensions and tolerances, the material, and the operating conditions at that position. The same data shows whether a stock item is suitable or the part has to be manufactured to order.
Paper Machine Clothing: Forming Fabrics, Press Felts and Dryer Fabrics
Paper machine clothing is the set of engineered fabrics and belts that carry the sheet through the machine. Each type belongs to one section:
- Forming fabrics: woven fabrics on which the sheet is formed; they retain fibers while water drains through.
- Press felts: carry the sheet through the press nips and take up the water pressed out of it.
- Dryer fabrics: hold the sheet against the dryer cylinders and guide it through the dryer section.
- Shoe press belts: run over the stationary shoe of a shoe press, where the sheet is pressed in an extended nip.
Paper machine felts and belts are made for a specific position. An inquiry normally states the machine section and position, fabric length and width, paper grade, machine speed, and the press or dryer configuration.
Rolls, Cylinders, Doctor Blades and Wear Parts
Rolls guide, support and press the sheet and the clothing. Cylinders dry the sheet. Doctor blades keep roll and cylinder surfaces clean and, on tissue machines, crepe the sheet off the Yankee cylinder. This group covers rolls, roll covers and coatings, cylinders, doctor blades and holders, and other parts exposed to continuous wear.
Rolls and cylinders are specified by face length and diameter, cover or coating material and hardness, crowning, load, speed, operating temperature and machine position. For doctor blades, suppliers also need the blade material, thickness and bevel, and the surface the blade runs against.
Pumps, Valves, Drives and Power Transmission Components
Pumps, valves and blowers move and regulate stock, water, chemicals, air and vacuum between stock preparation and the machine. Power transmission covers the motors, gearboxes, couplings and paper machine drive systems that turn each section at a coordinated speed.
Fluid-handling items are specified by flow and pressure, the medium and its consistency or solids content, temperature, and the materials in contact with the medium. Drive components are specified by power rating, speed range and torque, supply voltage, mounting dimensions, the enclosure rating for the installation environment, and how the drive communicates with the machine control system.
DCS, PLC, SCADA and Paper Mill Automation Systems
Paper mill automation systems are layered, and each layer has a separate job:
- DCS (distributed control system): continuous regulation of process loops across mill areas such as stock preparation, approach flow and steam.
- PLC (programmable logic controller): programmed logic for an individual machine or sequence, such as a winder or a pulper cycle.
- SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition): operator-level monitoring, visualization, alarms and data collection from controllers across the plant.
- QCS (quality control system): online measurement of sheet properties, covered in the next section.
- Mill software: production planning, tracking, reporting and analysis built on data from the layers above. Paper mill digitalization generally refers to this layer, including production management systems, data historians and analytics platforms.
Before comparing suppliers, document the existing control platform and its version, the I/O count and signal types, the communication protocols in use, and which systems the new one must exchange data with.
Quality Control Systems, Sensors and Process Instrumentation
Quality control systems for paper mills measure the sheet while it is being made, typically with sensors mounted on a scanner that traverses the web. The properties measured depend on the sensors installed; basis weight, moisture and caliper (thickness) are the most common.
Process control instrumentation covers the field devices elsewhere in the mill: transmitters and sensors for temperature, pressure, flow, level, consistency, speed, position and vibration.
For both, the points to compare are measurement range and accuracy, signal type (for example 4–20 mA, HART or fieldbus), communication protocol, the environmental conditions at the mounting point, and how the device or system connects to the existing control architecture.
Water, Steam, Condensate and Auxiliary Process Systems
Steam and condensate systems supply the dryer section and remove condensate from the cylinders. Water systems serve stock preparation, showers and cleaning. This group covers components and packaged systems for steam distribution, condensate handling, process water and paper mill water treatment systems, together with related auxiliaries.
An inquiry states water quality, flow rate, pressure and temperature, and whether the requirement is a single component or a system that ties into existing mill utilities.
How Should Buyers Compare Component, Automation and Process System Suppliers?
Compare suppliers against the requirement at a specific machine position or control task, not by product name. Two checklists cover most inquiries.
Mechanical components, clothing and replacement parts
- Machine section and component function
- OEM or machine model
- Drawing or part number
- Dimensions and tolerances

Paper Mill Components, Automation & Process Systems FAQs
Start with the machine section, the component function, the OEM or machine model, and the drawing or part number. Add dimensions, material and the operating conditions at that position: machine width and speed, pressure and temperature. State the quality documentation and delivery date required so the supplier can quote a lead time.
Send the supplier the OEM, model, drawing number, part number and measured dimensions, and ask for written confirmation that the product suits that application. A similar function or appearance is not proof of fit; the supplier’s confirmation against your data is.
A DCS regulates continuous process loops across mill areas. A PLC runs programmed logic for one machine or sequence. A SCADA system gives operators supervisory monitoring, visualization and data collection. A QCS measures sheet quality online. Mills commonly run several of them together, each in its own role.
Sheet properties measured online commonly include basis weight, moisture and caliper, depending on the sensors installed. Process instrumentation monitors temperature, pressure, flow, level, consistency, speed, position and vibration. Measurement ranges and accuracy vary by technology and are confirmed by the supplier.
